MLB at Rickwood Field

MLB renovated Rickwood Field, opened in 1910 and the centerpiece of Black Baseball for nearly a century, to serve as a living monument to the history of the Negro Leagues during a Juneteenth game between the Giants and Cardinals. Taking inspiration from the original design and publication methods of the 1920s-50s, the graphic system highlights hand-made typographic imperfections and original wood-type printing techniques.

The fan experience began with a twenty-one foot tall history wall, charting notable contributions the Negro Leagues made to baseball, society, culture, and Black business ownership.

Ten foot tall illustrated towers featuring legends of the game guided people past a 1947 Birmingham Barons bus and through the original ballpark entryway featuring a hand-written lineup board and historical displays. The ballpark featured 28 outfield wall advertisements from our modern sponors that were created to look like period-specific painted wood down to the original 1930s flat-head screws. Fans could take a free newspaper timeline of baseball’s integration to read in their seats as they watched 60 former Negro League players take the field for a special pre-game ceremony.
